Your Real Problem Might Not Be the Insurance Company
Aug 28, 2025Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: a lot of people in our industry really can’t stand insurance companies.
Scroll social media, walk into any restoration conference, or just listen to the conversations happening inside your company—and it won’t take long to hear the frustration:
“They’re killing our margins.”
“They’re holding up our cash flow.”
“We can’t win with carriers or TPAs.”
I’m not pretending those frustrations aren’t real. Insurance companies have gotten better at controlling the process, especially with contractors who allow themselves to be controlled.
But here’s the question I want to challenge you with:
Is that really why you're struggling?
Or could there be something else going on?
What’s Actually in Your Control?
Let’s pause the blame game and shift focus to what you can control:
- Do you have a salesperson or team generating leads outside of insurance referrals?
- Are you setting clear budgets before jobs start—and tracking them throughout the job?
- Do you have a documented collections process—and actually use it?
- Have you trained your team to explain to customers that the homeowner, not the carrier, is ultimately responsible for payment?
If the answer to those is "no"—then maybe the insurance company isn’t your biggest problem.
This Isn’t Just a Restoration Issue
You’ll find this same story in other industries:
- Doctors dealing with insurance reimbursements
- Body shops dealing with auto adjusters
- Glass companies trying to collect from carriers
Some of those businesses are thriving. Others are barely scraping by.
The difference?
The best-run ones focus on what they can control.
- They build processes.
- They coach their teams.
- They lead their clients.
- They track their numbers.
Stop Feeling Like a Victim. Start Acting Like a Builder.
You can’t control the carrier. But you can control:
- Your mindset
- Your systems
- Your sales strategy
If you’re feeling stuck or burned out, it’s time to look in the mirror.
Build a better sales engine.
Build better internal systems.
Build a team that knows how to lead clients - not just follow orders.
Your business depends on it.
