Have you ever heard the saying, "The more I prospect, the luckier I get!" I love it! There’s several versions of this old saying but I heard this one from Jeb Blount - it’s the title of chapter 5 in his book, Fanatical Prospecting.

Prospecting is the act of actively seeking out potential clients or customers for your business. It can take many forms, from cold-calling and emailing to attending networking events and asking for referrals. At first, prospecting can seem daunting and even a little scary. But the more you do it, the more you'll realize it's not so bad. When I started in the restoration business, I averaged 15 face-to-face visits a day, Monday through Friday. That’s 75 per week. A lot of people don’t want to do that, but I’m here to tell you it pays off in a big way. In fact, prospecting can be one of the most effective ways to grow your business and create your own luck. The more people you reach out to, the more opportunities you have to close deals and make sales.

When I first started getting jobs through my sales efforts, I told my mentor that I was feeling really lucky - his reply was, “You make your own luck.” In 2005, that was the first time I had ever heard that saying and it is on the short list of sayings that pops into my head on a regular basis. The more deals you close, the luckier you'll feel. But it's not just about luck. Prospecting is a skill that can be learned and improved upon over time. By learning the best techniques and strategies for prospecting, you can increase your chances of success.
